Links for Chemistry
These are some links to helpful resources for the chemistry student. There is also a special category below for MCATs and GREs.
Basics in Organic Chemistry
- Guide to Stereochemistry
- Illustrates various essential principles for naming, drawing, and understanding stereochemistry.
- Organic Chemistry Practice Problems
- A very large list of practice problems and answers covering nearly every topic, from the very easy to the very hard (the questions are color-coded for the level of class they are targeted for). Definitely a very useful site for studying.
- Organic Chemistry Help!
- Gives some basic assistance with organic chemistry. Not complete, but what little is there is well-written.
- Chemguide
- This was written for UK students taking their chemistry A-levels, but even if you aren't taking the test, it is a useful site for explainations of basic concepts in organic, inorganic, physical, and general chemistry.
- Central Florida Community College, Organic Chemistry
- If you can get past the irritating music constantly playing on every page, then this site has a useful collection of links for conceptual information on almost every fundamental functional group. A very useful resource; if only it were less irritating.
- Organic-Chemistry.org
- A good reference website for named reactions and their mechanisms, and articles on current topics in organic chemistry.
- Online Practice Problems in Organic Chemistry
- A searchable database with practice problems (and answers!) that come from organic chemistry courses taught at Harvard, UC Irvine, Northwestern, and other colleges. The problems can be organized by topic, making it an excellent way to ractice for tests. Some of the questions can get quite difficult, so beware!
- IUPAC Website for Nomenclature
- A very nice compilation of all of the words used in general, organic, and physical chemistry from the official people who make up the standards for naming everything.
- OCheM
- An extensive website with only tutorials, exams, flashcards, and practice problems. Most of the website is in Shockwave and animated, but this makes it quite helpful for visualizing concepts.
- Daley & Daley Organic Chemistry
- A free online organic chemistry textbook in PDF format. It is organized a bit differently from most textbooks, in that it tends to collect topics by reaction type rather than functional group. It may take some getting used to, but this is a very useful perspective for learning your reactions. An excellent resource, especially for the price. (Printed copies can also be ordered for a fairly low price)
- WebSpectra
- A list of drills and problems on interpreting 1H NMR and 13C NMR, IR, and 2D NMRs. The problems are grouped by difficulty, and span the scope from beginners to advanced chemistry students.
Interesting Demonstrations and Helpful Illustrations
- Organic Chemistry Demonstration Experiments on Video
- A very fascinating set of videos on a wide variety of experiments, from the halogen addition to olefins to the polymerization and setting of polyurethane foam to the chromatographic separation of chemicals. There is even a section on "Chemistry in Every Day Life."
- The Grand Orbital Table
- A visual table with pretty 3D representations of all of many atomic orbitals, organized by the 3 main quantum numbers (n, m, and l). A very good reference.
In-Depth Resources on More Advanced Chemistry
- Chemogenesis
- A whole online book going into a large amount of detail on chemical reactivity, from electronegativity to soft-hard acid-base theory to pericyclic reactions. Very in-depth, but if you want an unambiguous answer, reading this book will give it to you. The site also has a nice poster of Lewis acid/base chemistry and their nuances.
- The Organometallic HyperTextbook
- A basic online textbook on organometallic reactions and mechanisms. It's still a work in progress, but what is there is very good.
MCAT and GRE-Specific Resources
- Official AAMC Guide to Topics on the MCAT
- The PDFs on this page contain lists of the topics covered on the MCAT tests, including what specific concepts are necessary for the general chemistry and organic chemistry sections.
- ETS Official Guide to GRE Subject Tests
- Under the chemistry page, you will find both practice problems and a listing of the topics covered for the Chemistry GRE subject test.
Other Interesting Online Resources
- Linus Pauling's Research Notebooks Online
- Many scanned pages from the lab notebooks of a great chemist, who eventually discovered the structures of α-helices and β-sheets. He contributed greatly to the development of chemical techniques for the investigation of biological systems.
- Organic Chemistry Info Compendium
- A list of links to many tables on organic chemistry, from common reactive intermediates to pKa's to NMR tables.
- Al's Notebook
- A site mainly oriented towards synthetic organic chemists, this site collects many different useful bits of information for daily lab work, such as how to prepare stains for TLC, what solvent traces look like in NMR spectra, and what procedures to use for common experiments.
- WebElements Periodic Table Online
- A very extensive online period table, with pronunciation guides, descriptions of properties, common ionization states, isolation methods, and more.
